ROMANY SERIES

Romany Classic

The award winning Romany Classic is a short 16’, responsive, stable kayak both empty and loaded, with super high secondary stability, and neutral in winds and following seas. Designed for rough water and ease of handling in conditions, it is very comfortable for the athletic novice, yet many coaches also choose it as a work boat for its all day comfort in varied conditions. With one of the first and best keyhole cockpits offered in sea kayaks, it provides a wide range of fit for medium sized paddlers. The Romany tracks well for its length, and is easily controlled in wind with a minimum of weather cocking. Its high volume bow reduces plunging into waves. The maneuverability allows for good control in bumpy water or when playing in surf and rock gardens. Mostly it shines with its high secondary stability and keyhole cockpit providing a high level confidence and comfort in rougher, challenging waters. The up-on-edge secondary stability makes the Romany one of the easiest rolling boats we’ve experienced; you don’t have to roll as far ‘up’ to be stable. Originally designed as Nigel’s school boat for his Centre in North Wales, its broad function and high secondary stability have kept it as one of the baseline all around sea kayaks since its introduction in 1993.

The Romany Classic has three times won Sea Kayaker Magazine Readers Choice Awards for Best Roughwater Sea Kayak and Best Weekend Sea Kayak.

Dimensions: 16' x 21.5" Cockpit: 32” x 15.5”

An all-around day/weekend/play sea kayak for the medium sized 120-200 lb paddler. Length: 485 cm, width: 54 cm, depth: 32.5 cm, overall volume: 276.15 litres, front hatch volume: 57.5 litres, cockpit volume: 140 litres, day hatch volume: 37.5 litres, rear hatch volume: 41.6 litres.

Romany Surf

Based on the Romany Classic, the Romany Surf is designed for rough water and ease of handling in conditions. The Surf combines comfort, stability, and responsiveness in a high performance kayak for the medium to larger sized paddler. It is 2” longer and ½” wider in the stern than the Classic, supporting the extra weight and power of a larger paddler, hence doesn’t “squash down” as early at speed. It’s hull design is a larger person’s Romany with the same high stability, while the re-shaped foredeck allows for large feet: up to size 11/12 (Europe 46.5). The Surf offers extra knee height and leg room due to a raised area either side of the cockpit (the knee bumps) for those with longer femur bones or tighter hip/hamstring muscles. The seat is adjustable, and a wider seat is available. This kayak has a slightly wider keyhole cockpit that gives excellent grip, contact, and control while offering quick and easy entry and exit. The Surf has more volume in the rear compartments than the Romany Classic.

The sloping bulkhead behind the seat allows the kayak to be emptied by lifting only the bow; no x-rescue is necessary.

Dimensions: 16’ 2” x 22” Cockpit: 32” x 16”

A day/weekend kayak for the large paddler, length: 492 cm, width: 55 cm, depth: 34 cm, overall volume: 314 litres, front hatch volume: 64 litres, cockpit volume: 165 litres, day hatch volume: 42 litres, rear hatch volume: 43 litres.

Romany Surf RM

This compact, second generation polyethylene kayak is designed for the paddler who seeks full British safety features in a Greenland style Nigel Dennis Kayak. Its 16’ length is great for play, day or long weekend trips. It’s hull cross section is based on the Romany and Surf for liveliness, but with a bit more primary stability and a longer stern for more speed and glide. This boat is designed for the average size to larger kayaker using it for day paddling, play and shorter trips.

As with all the Romany series this responsive plastic kayak is all-day-comfortable while offering great play and surf for the better paddler. Its reasonably boxy rails offer good primary stability. A flattish hull promotes its surfing characteristics which also helps in a following sea. The kayak has been designed to fit a range of kayakers with plenty of room for large feet. Unique to RM plastic boats, this boat has a fiberglass cockpit rim allowing for use of your composite kayak skirt or a cheaper nylon spray deck.

This RM kayak has the new adjustable high performance glass seat, unless otherwise requested, and offers extra leg room due to the raised area, the knee bumps, either side of the cockpit. The seat can be set higher for a smaller paddler. The kayak has a low rear deck for easy rolling, a keyhole cockpit that gives excellent contact, control, and quick exits as needed. The sloping bulkhead behind the seat allows the kayak to be emptied by lifting only the bow; no x-rescue is necessary.

Dimensions: 16’ 1” x 22” Cockpit: 32” x 16”

A day/weekend kayak for the medium to large paddler, length: 489 cm, width: 54 cm, depth: 33 cm, overall volume: 282.5 litres, front hatch volume: 55 litres, cockpit volume: 160 litres, day hatch volume: 27.5 litres, rear hatch volume: 40 litres.

Romany Excel

A maneuverable and directionally stable Romany for the extra large paddler, the Excel is designed to smooth the rougher waters and ease handling in challenging conditions. It is truly a larger person’s performance and play sea kayak, yet provides comfort for the novice seeking extra stability for general touring due to its wider, flat hull shape. An ideal kayak for the 220+ lb paddler (16+ stones, 102+ kilos). This kayak again has a larger and wider keyhole cockpit for good contact but ease of entry and exit. Its extra leg room is complemented by the raised area, knee bumps, either side of the cockpit, and a wider high performance seat is fitted.

As with all NDKs, the Excel has a low rear deck for easy rolling, a cockpit offering safety and good contact, and the sloping bulkhead behind the seat allows the kayak to be emptied by lifting only the bow; no x-rescue is necessary.

Dimensions: 16’ 4” x 23.5”

A day/weekend kayak for the extra large paddler, length: 510 cm, width: 56.5 cm, depth: 36.5 cm, overall volume: 323 litres, front hatch volume: 67 litres, cockpit volume: 150 litres, day hatch volume: 47 litres, rear hatch volume: 59 litres.

Romany LV

A Romany for the paddler under 130 pounds, with the same NDK maneuverability and directional stability, designed for rough water and ease of handling in conditions. The kayak is more stable than the Pilgrim with a much lower deck, and less room for the legs. The kayak has been fitted with a new smaller keyhole cockpit, 3.5" (87mm) shorter than the Romany Classic and 1" (25mm) narrower with the leg braces brought back towards the paddler for shorter femurs. It has less volume and a lowered and re-designed front deck.

The kayak comes fitted with a foam seat, but can easily be fitted with a specially ordered high performance glass seat at no extra cost. The kayak has a very low rear deck for easy rolling, and the same sloping bulkhead behind the seat for ease of emptying by lifting only the bow; no x-rescue is necessary.

Dimensions: 16’ x 21.5”

A day/weekend kayak for the very small paddler, length: 487.5 cm, width: 54.5 cm, depth: 30 cm, overall volume: 244.9 litres, front hatch volume: 64.5 litres, cockpit volume: 103 litres, day hatch volume: 36.8 litres, rear hatch volume: 40.6 liters.
